INDIAN KING OF THE GUPTA EMPIRE (early 4th to late 6th centuries CE). This illustration is based on the mural paintings of the Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Gupta Empire at its height controlled much of India around the same time as the Sassanid Empire of Persia, the collapsing Western Roman Empire and the subsequent Germanic kingdoms. So, the Guptas were the dynasty that ruled much of India during the time that we know as “Migration Period” in European history. This term mostly refers to the barbarian invasions that contributed to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. In Europe, these barbarian invasions were mostly represented by Germanic tribes, as well as Slavic and Iranic (Scytho-Sarmatian) tribes. Many of these barbarian peoples were forced to migrate to Roman territories fleeing from the Huns. The Huns were a multi-ethnic confederacy of Eurasian nomadic tribes that originated from the Xiongnu (an earlier nomadic confederacy that ruled eastern Siberia and the Mongolian steppe at the time of the Han Empire of China). During their migration to the west, the Huns divided themselves into different clans, expanding in different directions. The most famous Huns are those who settled in Europe, and under the rule of Attila invaded the Western Roman Empire as far west as Roman Gaul. But other Hunnic groups migrated to Central Asia, from where they invaded Sasanian Persia and India. Just like the Huns of Europe had a decisive role in the fall of Rome, the Huns of north-western India played a part in the collapse of the Gupta Empire, which ruled the north-eastern part of the subcontinent.
The Gupta period has been called by some the “Golden Age of India” (I guess it can be debatable). What can’t be denied however is that Indian art and architecture flourished during that time. Many of the defining elements of the Medieval Indic civilizations of South and Southeast Asia, such as towering stone temples, kings and deities with golden crowns, etc, are popularized during the Gupta period.
