Paper: Barnabas Gospel is a Forgery?

Abstract
The sixteenth century manuscript entitled the Gospel of Barnabas has
evoked curiosity, scepticism, and debate. Like the Qurʾan, the Gospel of
Barnabas rejects the crucifixion and denies that Jesus was the Son of God; it
also portrays Jesus as the herald of the Prophet Muḥammad. Unlike the
Qurʾan, however, it denies that Jesus was the Messiah. While some Muslims
have presented the Gospel of Barnabas as proof of the continuity of the
Christian and Islamic messages, others – from a variety of faith backgrounds
– have cited considerable internal evidence suggesting that the Gospel of
Barnabas was partially or wholly composed in mediaeval Europe. Because
Islamic phraseology – especially Shiʿa phraseology – peppers the work,
some sceptics have suggested that a mediaeval Muslim scripted the Gospel
of Barnabas with an eye to proselytize. 1 This paper will compare the content
and themes of the Gospel of the Barnabas to the primary sources of Islamic
belief – the Qurʾan and the ḥadīth – with a special focus on Shiʿa ideas and
sources – to determine whether the Gospel really appears to be a Muslim
forgery.
